China has provided an ingenious idea to deal with the 21st century problem of traffic jams and over-population. With the population of China exceeding 1.3 billion in 2015[i], the issue of transporting all of these individuals has become prevalent. Enter the “Straddling Bus”, the modern redesign of the traditional way of commuting across the world. As you can see below, the bus would drive above normal passenger vehicles and take up two lanes during its travel.

With the lack of space available to expand horizontally, the idea of utilizing the space above is a truly innovative idea. The proposed bus would be able to carry 1,400 passengers and travel 40 miles an hour utilizing a specialized track built into the ground[ii]. This proposed bus is not only a smart way to transport a large number of people but it is also a stellar example of sustainability in action. This bus would run on electricity and replace 40 buses in terms of its output[iii]. By eliminating the need for 40 traditional buses from the roads, it is estimated fuel consumption would be reduced by 800 tons and carbon emissions would decrease by 2,500 tons[iv]. Through the outside-of-the-box thinking seen by the developers of this type of bus, we are beginning to see how environmental practices and improvement in quality of life intersect which bodes well for the future.
