When organizations think of sustainable material, they often assume they can have environmentally friendly products or inexpensive products, but never both. AirCarbon is aiming to change that mentality by combining methane and carbon dioxide with a propriety catalyst to produce a plastic that can be used to create a variety of products[i]. The real innovation behind this product is that AirCarbon re-purposes carbon from the atmosphere and utilizes it as a usable material[ii]. The company emphasizes that the product is completely carbon negative and that currently, AirCarbon’s plastics are being used by over 25 companies worldwide, one of which being Virgin [iii].

AirCarbon is one of the first companies successfully on the wave of re-purposing greenhouse gases for more productive use. If more companies begin to innovate by utilizing the diversion of greenhouse gas into usable products, we can create a market to help improve the economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our atmosphere. Novomer is another company that believes in the potential of putting greenhouse gases to use as they are trying to replace existing materials with sequestered carbon[iv]. It has been reported that Novomer estimates their work with carbon monoxide could yield a market potential of more than $12bn[v].

The idea of filling the market with an environmentally beneficial products that can sufficiently compete with established products is truly exciting and should bode well for future innovators who look to inspire positive change.
