Unilever, a multinational consumer goods corporation, is well known for providing some of the highest quality everyday goods to citizens across the world. Unilever own more than 400 brands world-wide with some of their more recognizable brands being AXE, Lipton, Vaseline, Ben and Jerry’s and Dove. Through all their brands, Unilever made approximately $77 billion of revenue in 2015 showing that when it comes to the consumer goods industry, there are few companies that operate more efficiently than Unilever.
With that being said, Unilever has taken a proactive approach to their everyday operations by integrating sustainability directly into their business strategy. In 2015, it was reported that Unilever’s sustainable brands, which include brands such as Dove and Lipton, grew 30% faster than the rest of the company’s business. By incorporating sustainable business practices directly into some of the biggest brands, Unilever have shown that there does not have to be a trade-off between environmentally friendly choices and growing their business.
Unilever also has announced that they send zero non-hazardous waste to landfills across 70 countries which has led to them saving approximately $227 million. Unilever claims that the path to achieving zero waste was based off their “Four R Approach” of reducing, reusing, and recovering or recycling.
It is through both Unilever’s implementation of zero-waste procedures and, their ability to grow their business by leveraging sustainable business practices that we commend Unilever for their leadership as corporate ambassadors for a new sustainable world. With Unilever’s documented success, we hope to see more companies follow suit and implement sustainable business practices into their organizations.
