How The StubHub Center and LAFC Became Major League Soccer Innovators

Beginning on July 15th 2016, the StubHub Center will become the first Major League Soccer specific stadium to utilize high-efficiency LED lights to illuminate it's venue. By replacing the traditional high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps seen in stadiums across the world, the StubHub Center will use approximate 60% less energy to illuminate their field. In addition to preserving energy, the implementation of these LED lights will provide improved clarity for spectators at the venue and a superior picture quality for viewers watching the game through use of a television. The LED lights also provide an adjustable toggle to increase or decrease the amount of light utilized to provide the perfect balance for spectators, an option that the HID lamps did not provide.

The StubHub Center is a great example of how the intersection between sustainable innovation and sport can combine to create "Sportability". Sportability aims to leverage the wide-spread influence sporting events possess to implement sustainable development that benefits environment while at the same time, doesn't impede the product on the field. We hope to see more stadiums follow the example set by the StubHub Center to help reduce the overall environmental footprint sporting events create.

The Los Angeles Galaxy Football Club (LAFC), who play at the StubHub Center, also have their own mission in regards to sustainability in sport which they call the "Protect The Pitch" initiative. 'Protect The Pitch" represents the LAFC commitment to making sport more sustainable while concurrently, making the world a more sustainable place. Through such means as reducing the environmental impacts at home games and practices, to supporting local community projects, the LAFC is doing their part to not only "Protect The Pitch" but also protecting our world as a global actors.
